Understanding the Ins and Outs of Off-Track Betting
If you’d like to get into off-track betting at your favorite sports bar and grill, you’ll need to know a few particulars before you get started.
Broadcasting
Signals from races are simulcast, or broadcast live, from the tracks the sports bar and grill are affiliated with. The tracks will send wagering information and the actual races and results to the sports bar.
Purchasing a Ticket and Betting
A pari-mutuel teller, employed by the racetracks, sells tickets to people placing wagers. There are different wagers that you can place on a horse or horses that depend on how they’ll finish a race.
Win, Place, and Show:
Winning is fairly self-explanatory—the horse you wager to win must finish the race in first. If the horse finishes first or second, the horse has placed, and if the horse finishes in any of the first three places, the horse showed.
Across the Board:
This is one ticket for one horse to either win, place, or show. These wagers can turn out to be highly profitable if a horse wins the race, as then the bettor will receive the payouts for all three wagers of win, place, and show.
Exotic Wagers:
There are several unique off-track betting wagers in horse racing that make things interesting. The betting gets riskier and more exciting the larger and more complicated the wagers are. For example, a pick-six wager wins if the winning horses are correctly selected for six consecutive races.
